Who Is Advising The Leaders?
The problems we face as an organisation or a nation is not only with leaders but with those who surround them. A leader’s reign is made or marred depending on the character, value and experience of his/her friends, closest family members, assistants, advisers. Rehoboam, a king of Israel, at the beginning of his reign was approached by the people to tell them what his reign would look like. Rehoboam consulted the elders that sat before his father Solomon for many years as mentees/assistants/advisers and they counselled him with wisdom. See 1 Kings 12; 6 – 7. But Rehoboam, wanting to consult widely (as we often say), reached out to his friends – the young men whom he grew up with – for their counsel. And of course, they counselled him wrongly. 1 Kings 12; 10 – 15.
The outcome of that was that God reduced the territory over which Rehoboam ruled from twelve to two tribes. 1 Kings 12:21.
If you are a leader in one capacity or the other, I ask you: What is your reference point before you make every decision? Do you consider the well-being of your people before you make the decision? Do you listen to the lone voices of your inner caucus who have been blinded from the suffering and crying of your people by your paraphernalia of office? The poor, the orphans, the widows, the widowers, the fatherless, the motherless, the physically challenged, the hungry, the naked, the sick, the homeless, the deprived, the jobless all exist outside the walls of your office and official residence. They are often insulated from you by your eyes and ears. Take heed to their crying and suffering.
You Are Chosen To Rule In Equity & Fairness
We should not forget too soon that the Most High rules in the affairs of men and He gives it to whomsoever He wills, by whatsoever means men and women, young and old choose as in Daniel 4:17. In His sovereignty, He gives it to whomsoever He wills. That passage says according to the Messenger version of the Bible, “The Most High arranges kingdom affairs however He wishes it; He makes leaders out of losers“.
Another version of Good News Bible (Catholic Edition) says, “…all people everywhere know that the Supreme God has power over human kingdoms and that He can give them to those who are the least important.”
Have you been chosen to lead your people in one capacity or the other? Have you considered that it is a responsibility bequeathed on you by the Most High, though the voices of the people who chose you? Are you seeking to fulfil the desire of the Most High while on that job?
What Happened When Adam, Eve, Israel Rejected God’s Rule Over Them?
God’s initial plan for His people was to be their Leader and their Ruler. But a time came that His people knew enough to demand their freedom from the rulership of This Invisible God that they do not see.
Israel rejected His reign over them as a nation, He permitted their will. 1 Samuel 8: 4- 9. For they had consistently forsaken Him and sought after other gods. They rejected His rule over them. A nation that came out of bondage by the Mighty Hands of God; fed in the wilderness by God; led through the wilderness by a pillar of cloud by day and pillar of fire by night. He improvised electricity for them to see at night; yet they rejected Him.
Man often feels he knows it better without God; we often lift up our eyes, like Lot – Abraham’s nephew, to the plain of Jordan, well watered like Garden of the Lord and we often choose that. But at the end of it is the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The city from afar looks like a garden of Eden where man had everything delivered to him; no toil, no sweat, God the Father was the husbandman, where He caused the earth to yield its increase without man’s intervention – a place of abundance of natural resources; a place where God wanted only fellowship with man. Man judges by sight.
Despite Our Choice of Leaders
Example to consider when men and women demanded their own leader was in the days of Samuel when the children of Israel cried to Samuel to give them a king like other nations. Though Samuel was sad, God obliged them and chose them a man called Saul.
However, God warned them that Saul “will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants…and you will cry out that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves…” 1 Samuel 8: 15 & 18.
No matter what the size of your portfolio is, God has permitted you to be chosen to lead people. Do not forget that too soon because the journey ahead, your friends, the people you will on the way, the paraphernalia of office, the pride of life, lust of your flesh will soon erode the values from you. Watch out.
